Log in to DigiD with your driver’s license and pin code? It is possible from July 1
From 1 July 2023 it is possible to log in to DigiD with a driver’s license and pin code. Comparable to logging in via an identity card, which has been possible since 2021. This new way of logging in would be more secure and would raise the security level to a higher level. Very handy when it comes to sensitive privacy-related data.

Log in with renewed identity card
Since 2021, identity cards have been equipped with an NFC chip with which you can log in to the DigiD app. An NFC chip is comparable to Bluetooth. In this way you exchange contactless data in a safe way. The data that requires the new ‘high’ security level, such as medical data, can now only be viewed via NFC. Do you want to log in to a service with less privacy-sensitive data? Then you can still log in with a DigiD username and password. Of course you can also use the DigiD app to log in. The ID check also applies here, to confirm a person.
Log in with a driver’s license
Do you have a driving license issued between May 2018 and 1 July 2023? Then you have a driving license with an NFC chip that you can use to log in to DigiD. Thanks to logging in via driver’s license and pin code, there is more certainty that the right person is logging in. According to the government organization Logius, this creates more security, although there are currently no services that use this higher security level.
Required PIN
If you want to use your driver’s license, issued from May 2018 to July 1, 2023, to log in to DigiD, you also need a pin code. You cannot log in to the service without this code. Not even if you do have the correct driver’s license. This is because the required pin code has not been given in the meantime. However, it is possible to request this for € 3.50. You will receive the letter with PIN code by post. For all latest driving licenses you do not have to pay extra for the pin code, because this is included in the price for purchasing the driving license.
How does it work exactly?
The chip is incorporated in a driver’s license issued in 2018, recognizable by an ID logo on the back of the card. It is possible to log in via the DigiD app. Open the app and scan the NFC chip of your driver’s license, then enter your personal pin code. You will therefore automatically receive this by letter if your driving license is dated 1 July or later. It is not a one-time login, every time you want to log in again you will have to scan the chip and enter your pin code. Do you not have a mobile phone with an NFC reader to scan the chip with? Then it is also possible to do this via the computer. Thanks to an NFC card reader, which you can install on Windows 10 and MacOS, you can always use the PC to log in.
Log in with DigiD
An ID check is always required if you want to log in to an organization affiliated with DigiD. This one-time check checks the passport, identity card or driver’s license to confirm the correct person. The use of this one-time check is used by more and more organizations. The data is not stored by the organization that uses it and therefore it must always be checked when you log in again.
