This is how the environmentally friendly route planning of Google Maps works
Environmentally friendly route planning via Google Maps has been possible for some time. The tool uses traffic data to determine the most efficient route to the destination. But how exactly does that actually work?
It wasn’t that long ago that Google introduced a new mode for its in-house map platform, Google Maps. The focus of the new function is not on new means of transport, but on planning the route as economically as possible. Because various factors influence the amount of fuel you use.
The right data should ensure more efficiency and fewer emissions. So if you are planning a route to work, the system not only takes current traffic into account, but also environmental factors. The condition of the roads also plays an important role here.
Eco-friendly route planning from Google Maps takes various factors into account
Logically, Google does not reveal how exactly the algorithm calculates the route. In the corresponding help document the company only names a few factors that influence the planning. This includes the type of engine (combustion engine, hybrid engine or electric motor) and the road conditions already mentioned.
In addition, the app uses data about the average consumption in the region as well as gradients and patterns in everyday traffic flow. On this basis, Google Maps shows the percentage of fuel saved directly in the route planning. This refers to the use of the efficient route compared to alternative routes.
Vehicle type settings directly in the app
If you want to use the feature, you should enter information about your vehicle. To do this, enter a destination and select the option to change the engine type under the energy-efficient route. By default, Google assumes an internal combustion engine. There is initially only a need for action for owners of electric vehicles.
If you don’t want to use the environmentally friendly routes from Google Maps, you can also deactivate them via the app. To do this, go to your avatar and select the route option in the settings menu. There you have the option of using the fastest route by default.
