This question is also the Check24 bank pursued. A total of 2,038 people were interviewed in a representative survey in May 2023. The result: 86 percent of Germans only go to the ATM up to four times a month.
In addition, 21 percent of respondents stated that they only withdraw money from ATMs once a month. A total of 22 percent said they use an ATM less than once a month.
Young people get by without money from the machine
The group of people who actually still use ATMs regularly is therefore small: only about six percent withdraw money more than four times a month. A total of four percent even stated that they would not use cash at all.
It is striking that young people in particular between the ages of 18 and 24 manage without cash. At eight percent, their share is twice as high as in the total population.
Germans use ATMs less and less
The survey also revealed that Germans generally go to the bank less often. Because only about 37 percent made their way to a bank branch in the past twelve months – this does not include ATMs and bank statement printers.
Only 19 percent of those surveyed stated that they had been to a bank once in the past year. 14 percent visited a branch twice, eight percent three times and 16 percent more than three times.
However, the 18 to 24 year olds also stand out. The proportion of people who have been to a bank branch at least once in the past twelve months was particularly high at 70 percent.
