‘Everything was covered in egg yolk’
You can bet that the Mother’s Days that stay with you forever are not the perfect pictures, but the breakfasts in bed where not everything goes smoothly.
Aaf (29) mother of Jasmijn (10) and Lili-Rose (8):
“On Mother’s Day I always get breakfast in bed. Usually my husband helps and lets Jasmijn and Lili-Rose do some chores, but last year they were allowed to do it all by themselves. I knew that. At least an hour I heard ringing and even loud clatter from the kitchen. Finally, two bright red girls entered the bedroom with a tray. They watched expectantly how I would rate the breakfast. Let me put it briefly: it was an ordeal.
“This year I will send my husband down on time just to be on the safe side”
The Nespresso had worked out perfectly, just ice cold, because that’s what they put first. The tea was made with warm water and contained six scoops of sugar. The eggs were still raw, as I discovered when I tapped them and everything was covered in egg yolk. And they had ‘baked’ the bake-off rolls in the microwave. The butter and thick layers of jam and sprinkles on top made it somewhat edible, but the first bite was like a ball on my stomach. I lavishly praised them for their cooking skills, but this year I am sending my husband down on time just to be on the safe side.”

Rosalie (36), mother of Siem (13) and Dean (11):
“With two big boys in the house, I really didn’t expect any more crafts or verses on Mother’s Day, but a nice breakfast in bed. After all, they always did. Especially after the divorce, I thought it was an attractive idea that I could lie down and have my sons take care of me.
At eight o’clock I heard the boys coming out of their bedrooms, but two hours later I had not seen anyone nor heard any noise in the kitchen. Around eleven I got out of bed and saw Siem and Dean sitting back and watching Nickelodeon. When I cautiously inquired if perhaps I had risen too early and could still expect breakfast, they both looked up in astonishment. Mothers Day? Wasn’t that just next week? So no. In the end, they just turned it into a sweet brunch.”
