Gaps in the range of e-cars under criticism

One of the most important pillars for car manufacturers is the business with company cars – but the demand from the companies leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest problem, according to experts, is the lack of attractive models.

Lack of supply, sluggish demand: e-cars in crisis?

Combustion engines still dominate company fleets. According to the experts at management consultancy PwC Strategy&, the main problem is the lack of variety of models for e-cars. The share of company cars in relation to the total number of e-cars is not negligible: half of all electric cars sold in Germany last year went to commercial customers.

“Fleets and motor pools are therefore important adjustment screws for the German mobility turnaround and a fundamental market for domestic car manufacturers,” says Felix Kuhnert, an expert on the car market at PwC Strategy&.

According to Kuhnert, there are gaps in station wagons in particular: “At the moment, however, we are still seeing enormous ones Gaps in the station wagon segmentthat can be used just as well at work as on family vacations.” It is up to the manufacturers to serve the market with models that are attractive to companies (source: southern german). According to Kuhnert, the political and economic conditions are the be-all and end-all. In the coming year, the number of electric cars in company fleets (from 13 percent in March 2023) could increase to 21 percent. With appropriate government funding and guidelines with regard to more environmentally friendly fleets, the proportion could even rise to a third.
