Control: Ultimate Edition – Next-gen version runs smoother on PS5
Remedy’s third-person shooter control already made the last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One sweat in the summer of 2019. On the older devices, the game almost degenerated into a flip book in demanding scenes, and the stuttering caused frustration for many players.
Now the developers of the Ultimate Edition of Control have donated a next-gen update, which promises better performance and more opulent graphics on PS5 and Xbox Series X / S. The technology experts from Digital Foundry took a closer look at the new version on the three consoles and compared the results:
The astonishing conclusion: The next-gen version of Control runs best on Sony’s PlayStation 5. This is particularly evident when you play the game in performance mode. This aims for a smooth frame rate of 60 FPS and also dispenses with ray tracing. Both the PS5 and Series X render at 1440p (2560 x 1440 pixels) in this mode and can reliably maintain the frame rate in most cases.

Xbox Series X with puzzling problems: what’s wrong with the next-gen console?
However, what stands out about the Xbox Series X game scenes is the increased occurrence of micro-stutteringthat affect the feel of the game particularly badly. This happens above all with graphically demanding sequences and, irritatingly, also with scenes in which text is faded in large on the screen. The Xbox Series S struggles with the same problem.
Not even the technology experts know what the cause of the phenomenon is. In your opinion, it is not the hardware of the Microsoft consoles. They have already notified the developers of their findings and received an answer. Remedy is aware of the problem and will try to find out why. However, it is unclear whether the problem can be fixed with a simple patch.
With the Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5, Sony and Microsoft have not only given their consoles a massive hardware upgrade, but there are also numerous new functions to marvel at:
The bottom line is that the next-gen version of Control runs much smoother on the PS5. The annoying micro stutters in performance mode should be noticed negatively by hardcore gamers in particular. Casual gamers, on the other hand, may not notice any difference.
