Sponsored – Wise life lessons with Mario
When the rain hits the windows, my kids know: more screen time! And secretly I don’t mind that at all, because a game of Mario together on the Nintendo Switch is great fun and – who would have thought – teaches us wise life lessons.
Ever since the Nintendo Switch came into my family, the mustachioed game hero Mario has been our best friend. As a child of the 1980s, I fully applaud that, because I cherish fond memories of the Italian plumber. The recognizable music and sounds throw me back in time when I was in the hospital for a week because of a severe appendicitis. The Nintendo in the children’s section, including the Mario game, was my salvation.
Life lessons with Mario
The time is more than right for Mario. All games around him and his famous friends look very slick. Our favorite is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. But a close second is New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. We can play with four at the same time and everyone at their own level. For example, the rabbit Nabbit does not die from enemies and that plays a lot more relaxed for Mats. The game does require some mutual communication, because more than once we get in each other’s way, which results in dangerous situations with shields and Goombas (a kind of strict mushrooms) lying around. Immediately a nice lesson: learn to listen to each other!
Continue nonetheless
The game Super Mario Odyssey offers even more cooperation. One plays Mario and the other his hat with eyes: Cappy. It takes a while to find out how you can achieve the best actions together, but once we are attuned to each other, we come a long way. Together you walk through colorful 3D worlds with the ultimate goal of freeing Princess Peach from a marriage with that brutal Bowser. Occasionally it is quite exciting, for example when we have to defeat a major enemy. Mats sometimes finds it so difficult that he wants to throw in the towel. But because we do it together and try again, he perseveres.
Talk about listening to each other and persevering when the going gets tough. Who would have ever thought that good old Mario would still help me raise my children? At least I don’t.
If you also feel like playing a game with Mario and your family, there are many more titles on the market. For example: Super Mario 3D World + Bower’s Fury and Super Mario Maker 2. More information can be found on Nintendo.nl.
