Twitter is officially ending its free API, and it’s already a mess
Twitter has officially put an end to its free API, which means at the same time that the applications or plug-ins that relied on this API are no longer functional. The switch to a paid API was announced in February, then postponed due to several technical difficulties. But this time, the mass is said, and the disappearance of the Twitter API is already affecting many applications. Thus, the option to register via his Twitter account no longer works on many apps, including Post News, Substack and many others. Jetpack Social (a WordPress plugin), Echobox, Flipboard or even Social Bearing are also affected.
The new free Twitter API only allows 1500 requests per month (for connection with the Twitter login in the app), and to go up to 50,000 requests per month, developers must now pay a monthly fee of 100 dollars! Those who need even more requests (beyond 50,000 therefore) will have to go through the Enterprise API, whose monthly payments can reach 42,000 dollars/month. No, you’re not dreaming… And because Musk-style Twitter does very little to be friendly, many developers or publishers who pay for the new API are already reporting a mess of worries. Decidedly, when it does not want…
