These 8 monsters of the Web eat up all the bandwidth!
It’s a document published on March 1, 2023, by Statistawhich reveals the distribution of global internet traffic in 2022. We thus discover that 56.1% of global traffic is held by 10 clearly identified services, but above all by 8 giants who reign supreme in the sector.
The video in the foreground
At the forefront of the platforms that capture global traffic, there are quite logically two video giants: Netflix, with 14.9% market share, as well as YouTube and its 11.6%. However, they are not alone in the ranking: Disney+ captures 4.5% of traffic and Prime Video 2.8%! 22.2% of global traffic is therefore captured by paid streaming platforms, 33.8% by the free or paid video offer.
A predominance of video which is not surprising. In recent years, all trends have been in this direction. Streaming platforms are multiplying, most social networks are betting more and more on the distribution of audiovisual content, it is clear that this development corresponds to a demand from the general public.
Social networks are also betting on video
To a lesser extent, this ranking also includes social networks. Obviously, TikTok comes first, with 3.9% of the traffic captured. A place that follows the logic of the rise of video. The social platform only offers this kind of content, through an infinitely scrollable news feed.
Behind, we find Facebook, with 2.9%, a figure and a place reflecting the slow but confirmed decline the number of visitors to the platform. Also present, among the 8 monsters of the Web that capture global traffic, are the download services of the PS Store as well as Xbox Live.
So, what does this study tell us? First of all, it confirms the predominant place of video in our daily lives. Moreover, it confirms an unbalanced distribution of global traffic: 8 companies share 46.5% of global traffic. A form of monopoly which also questions some operators on the advisability of having these players contribute to the extent of their use of the bandwidth!
