Locked up in the garden: “The neighbor thought: who is this madman?”
Every month a mother talks about the moment in motherhood when things went completely wrong.
Sheleen (30), lives with Jim (35), mother of Chandéé (8) and Kyann (4):
“Two years ago I was working in the backyard with Kyann to clean up together. It was about four o’clock on a sunny day. One moment Kyann was still standing next to me, but in the blink of an eye he suddenly ran in, slammed the door behind him and locked it. I played along, laughed a little, then asked through the glass if he would open the door for Mom again.
Locked up
But Kyann, then two and an enterprising, mischievous little man, refused to unlock the door. I tried everything to make it clear to him that I couldn’t get in and that he should let me in, but he just laughed and waved at me.
“My son was just laughing at me and waving at me”
Funny in retrospect, but at the time I was very worried because of the situation: my boyfriend was at work, my daughter Chandéé was staying over and my toddler was alone inside. Luckily he couldn’t reach the drawers that held the knives yet, but I couldn’t bear to think anything would happen. I felt so powerless. I was locked in the backyard, because the gate was also locked and that key was on the bunch that was inside on the table.

Junk at the door
In the end I was locked out for more than two hours, slightly panicked by now. Kyann didn’t think it was so funny anymore either. He was hungry and began to whimper. I had been busy alarming the neighbors for a while now. I called several times, without success. Now I threw balls and other toys from our garden at their window: anything to attract attention.

By six o’clock the neighbor finally came home and went to see what madman was throwing junk. I was overjoyed to see him. The neighbor then drove to my parents who live six minutes away and have a spare key. Since then I always take my phone with me when I walk out.”
