Sony sold more than 7 million PS5s in the fourth quarter of 2022
playstation had a superb 4th quarter of 2022: we knew it a little (a lot) since Sony announced that the PS5 had crossed 30 million copies, but the publication of the firm’s results confirmed the big improvement. Thus Sony sold 7.1 million PS5s in Q4 2022, a truly stunning score and which translates into raw data that hurts the competition: 32.1 million PS5s have found takers since the launch of the console. This is not (yet) the case, but we are gradually approaching the “2 PS5 consoles sold for an Xbox Series”, which would be a repetition of the previous generation and therefore truly catastrophic for Microsoft.
7.1 million PS5s is also almost twice as much as the 3.9 million PS5s sold in Q4 2021. Despite the very unfavorable economic context, therefore, despite also the increase in the price of the PS5, the sales literally soared. This also confirms that the PS5 is much more available than just two or three quarters ago, even if the situation is still quite tense in certain countries (including France unfortunately).
Everything is not so rosy on the PlayStation side since the number of PS+ subscribers has once again fallen from one quarter to another. 46.4 million players are subscribed to the service, i.e. 1.6 million players less than in Q3. The average income per user has however increased, which is all in all logical given the proliferation of PS+ subscription formulas. The virtual stagnation in the number of subscribers to the service and the fact that Sony is struggling to recruit players who were not Playstation players before no doubt explains why Xbox still dominates its main competitor in terms of the overall number of active players (120 million on the side from Xbox, i.e. 20 million more than from Sony)
