5 little-known Google Pixel tricks
1/ Home screen rotation
Maybe you want to use your Google Pixel as a tablet. In this case, it is possible to make sure to use it in landscape mode, including in the home screen. To do this, do a long press in an empty area of the home screen and do Home settings. Here you can activate Allow home screen rotation. And as if by magic, the home screen will follow the rotation of the screen if you turn it 90°…
2/ Multilingual keyboard input
Multilingual input allows you to type on a keyboard without it being the correct one. Explanation: imagine that you have a double Estonian and French keyboard: the system will switch from one to the other, correcting the words if necessary. Please note, this does not work with all languages, but it allows you to type without worrying about the active keyboard. Go into Settings > System > Languages & Input > On-Screen Keyboard > Gboard > Languages then Add a keyboard and activate Multilingual input.
3/ The double support on the back to launch an action
The Google Pixel are equipped with a sensor on the back of the device which allows you to launch an action when you tap it: this is the double tap. Go into Settings > System > Gestures > Double tap to launch actions. Activate Use double tap. You are free to choose what you want to trigger with this gesture: take a screenshot, Access your digital assistant, Play or pause media content, See recent apps, Show Notifications, Turn on/off the flashlight and Open an app. If you have a hull, it is even possible to adjust the Double Tap Sensitivity.
4/ Instant subtitles with on-the-fly translation
On the Google Pixel, it is possible to display subtitles for any app. Go into Settings > Accessibility > Live Captions and activate Use instant captions. If you want to translate these subtitles on the fly, just add a language. For example, you can display translations on the fly in YouTube or in any other application.
5/ Access to the microphone and the camera
If you want to be sure not to share access to the microphone or the camera during a professional meeting, for example, it is possible to do so very quickly from the top drop-down panel, that of notifications. Tap two bubbles to cut access. If you don’t have these bubbles in your notification area, you will have to pull down this top menu and choose the pencil icon at the bottom right. Rearrange your bubbles. You might even discover very practical accesses like the one to your voice recorder (tape recorder), your storage or a shortcut to your VPN…
