SkyShowtime is here (and these are 5 reasons not to take it yet)

Streaming service SkyShowtime enters the Netherlands with a nice deal and a handful of well-known series and films. But at the moment, the new streaming service is not yet good enough to cancel your Netflix subscription.

SkyShowtime in the Netherlands: this is necessary

With SkyShowtime in the Netherlands we have a streaming service. SkyShowtime competes with Netflix, Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus and HBO Max, among others.

First of all, the service does this at an attractive price: if you take out a subscription now, you will receive a fifty percent discount for the rest of your life. In addition, the service relies on some well-known names, such as Star Trek, A Quiet Place, Sonic and Halo. But that’s not enough. More needs to be done before SkyShowtime is truly relevant in the streaming market.

1. Add missing series and movies

SkyShowtime came to the market with a clear concept: this is the place to watch everything from Star Trek and top series like Yellowjackets and Dexter: New Blood. In practice it is different.

Yellowjackets can still be seen at Ziggo, Dexter: New Blood is not there yet and the Star Trek offer is also disappointing with the most striking lack of the Star Trek: Discovery series. This series has been taken off Netflix and the latest season has never even been shown in the Netherlands. SkyShowtime would be the place to finally watch this series legally in the Netherlands, but unfortunately.

In addition, it is strange that the service does offer Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and A Quite Place Part II, but not the first parts of these films. If you haven’t seen it yet, then the sequels are of no use to you either. We also have to wait for new films such as Top Gun: Maverick, Nope and Jurassic World Dominion to appear on the service.

2. Expand the offer

In addition, the offer is very limited. Usually with new streaming services it is easy to make a list of the best top series and movies, but with SkyShowtime that is quite difficult.

In terms of new stuff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a lot of fun and Halo is quite entertaining too. And if you want drama, Yellowstone and its spin-offs may be worth checking out. But the service doesn’t really have anything yet to attract the general public to SkyShowtime. We have to make do with promises of what is to come.

3. Make a better app

SkyShowtime’s app also leaves a lot to be desired. In the settings you cannot indicate in which quality series and films should be downloaded to watch offline. There is also no app available for all kinds of devices, such as for game consoles and Samsung televisions. And if an app does work, then there are a lot of problems with the subtitles. Sometimes there is no Dutch available or the subtitles suddenly lag behind.

4. Add 4K

It’s 2022 and SkyShowtime is introducing a new streaming service in the Netherlands with series and movies that you want to watch in the best quality and you don’t even support 4K? This option will come later according to SkyShowtime.

5. Promote your service and productions better

If you want to be a success in the crowded streaming market, you have to put in a bit of effort in the promotion. I saw an ad for Halo, a series full of interesting characters, action and mystery. The only text of the ad was: “It’s alien time”. Not very inviting, right?

A promo post on Instagram stated “Register on the website now and pay half price, lifetime.” Doesn’t that sound more like a threat than an offer? There is still much to gain here.
