The new season of “Battle of the Companies”: Aldi vs. Lidl

Aldi versus Lidl. A battle between giants. In 1962, the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht founded the discounter Aldi. The concept: inconspicuous shops, but good quality for a low price. A retail revolution. Aldi has shaped the way people shop in Germany to this day. It was only 11 years later that Dieter Schwarz copied the Aldi concept and founded Lidl.

For a long time, Aldi’s fight against Lidl seemed to be unequal. Aldi’s lead was too big. But Dieter Schwarz managed to turn Lidl into a global chain in the decades to come. The gap kept getting smaller: Aldi faltered, Lidl flourished. Internationally, Lidl has long been one step ahead. But in Germany, Aldi has always been able to hold onto the throne of the discounter. The question is: for how much longer?

“Aldi vs. Lidl” is a story about the German economic miracle after the war. The history of discounters explains why most people in Germany are not willing to spend a lot of money on groceries. And it’s a story about two of the richest families in Germany, about which almost nothing is publicly known.
