Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro preview: our first findings

Today Xiaomi in Munich announced the new 12T and the 12T Pro. The brand focuses on the many possibilities of the camera, along with of course the 108MP in the 12T and the 200MP camera in the Pro. DroidApp has already tried the devices, and hereby we share our first findings.

Preview of Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro

We’ve got the Xiaomi 12T and Xiaomi 12T Pro announcement behind us. Time to play with the devices; something DroidApp has already been allowed to do. The phones are very similar and feel the same, with a (very) smooth casing. Fortunately, we can tell you that Xiaomi not only includes the charger, but also the silicone cover to protect the device. Both smartphones have a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a Full-HD resolution. Like the 12T Pro, the 12T has a 5000 mAh battery with 120W charging. It only takes 19 minutes to charge the battery.

Differ

However, there are differences between the two devices. We see this reflected in the camera, which we will come back to later in the Xiaomi 12T preview. The 12T has a 108 megapixel camera, the 12T Pro leaves the factory with the 200 megapixel camera; a lens that we already saw at Motorola. From the outside, the only difference is the indication of the number of megapixels on the camera module. The chipset is also different. For example, we see the high-end Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 from Qualcomm with the 12T Pro. The Xiaomi 12T gets the fast MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Ultra from the brand.

In our first use, it is noticeable that when we put the phones next to each other, tasks are performed just a little faster by the Xiaomi 12T Pro, although the 12T itself can certainly not be called slow. Xiaomi supplies the smartphones with Android 12, with its own MIUI 13 skin. What you think of this skin is mostly personal. However, the possibilities with this skin are endless, such as using the familiar, old notification window, or the new version. This allows you to swipe down on the top left of the screen for notifications, and swipe down on the right for quick settings.

When we compare the sound quality between the two models, we don’t really notice any difference. Both sound fine, although we will test this extensively later. The smartphones are both equipped with Dolby Atmos support. However, the 12T Pro also has the addition Sound by Harman Kardon at the top, striking that we do not hear a clear difference when using the speakers between the two models. So let’s dig a little deeper.

Camera

The camera is one of the main points where the biggest differences can be seen. The 12T gets a 108 megapixel camera, the 12T can make do with a 200 megapixel camera. We also saw this 200MP Samsung sensor with the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, so we will go into this in more detail in a later review. For now, we’ve compared the 12T’s camera with the 12T’s.

Xiaomi 12T - Xiaomi 12T Pro camera

If we use the devices side by side, it is immediately apparent that the 12T Pro is the more advanced phone. The camera plays a lot more with depth of field and blur, and is also much more colorful. We also see a big difference when using the zoom function, where the photo of the 12T Pro shows much more detail. The zoom function is striking, since (unfortunately) a telephoto lens is missing. Instead, Xiaomi has opted for a 2 megapixel macro lens, which we find striking. Of course we will go into this in more detail in the review of the Xiaomi and also test it under more circumstances. Because, among other things, the night mode should deliver high-quality images.

Xiaomi 12T (Pro)

We will extensively work with the new device from Xiaomi in the coming time, to take a better look at things. It is clear that Xiaomi wants to offer you the best of the best and to compete with brands such as Motorola, OnePlus and of course Samsung. Whether that will succeed, you will soon read in an extensive review on DroidApp.
