AirPods Pro 2: first impression
On September 7, not only the new iPhone 14 and the Apple Watches were shown, the AirPods Pro also received an update. Apple announced the AirPods Pro 2. But what exactly is new with this brand new set of earplugs? iPhoned gives you our first impression of the AirPods Pro 2!
1. Noise cancellation is better
Perhaps the most important reason to choose AirPods Pro (and not go for the AirPods 3) is the noise cancellation. The noise canceling ensures that you can enjoy your music undisturbed in a busy train, a (too) full office or on an airplane.
The noise reduction has become a lot better with the AirPods Pro 2, according to Apple, and can filter out up to twice as much noise. We’re not sure about ‘twice more’, but the noise canceling is indeed a bit better. You can still hear voices and background noises very softly when you have the noise reduction on, but it no longer disturbs.
What Apple has also tinkered with is the transparency mode. This allows you to still hear the ambient sounds when you have the earbuds in. The microphone then picks up the ambient noise and lets it be heard through the speakers.
However, Apple has added a new feature to this called ‘Adaptive Transparency’. This mutes loud noises in your environment. For example, you can still hear a loud motor racing by, but much less loudly.
We have not yet been able to extensively test this function. But on a (much too) noisy birthday, the AirPods Pro 2 managed to make the most ‘cackle’ sound less loud. So at least the feature does what Apple promised.
2. Sound quality and microphone: slightly better
When you take the first generation AirPods Pro or the AirPods 3, you will notice some difference. The bass and low tones are a bit more present and the highs sound a bit cleaner on the latest AirPods Pro 2. However, it is not a very big difference, so for this reason alone you do not have to switch from the previous AirPods. After all, the sound quality of the AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro 1 was already fine.
In addition, the microphone is a bit better. Telephone conversations in a (very) busy train sound a little clearer to the receiver. Even if you often use voice commands via Siri, the tweaks to the microphone are a welcome addition. Siri picks up the voice commands just a little better and you don’t have to repeat things as often, which is sometimes the case with the AirPods 3.
3. Upgrades for the case and touch controls
The storage box now also has a speaker. When the box of the AirPods Pro 2 makes a sound for the first time, it takes some getting used to. Every time you charge the box, it now lets you know with a sound. Do you think that is annoying? Then the option can also be turned off in the settings.
However, the feature is most useful for the ‘Find My’ feature. If you have placed the charging case somewhere else, you can now make it beep. That makes it a bit easier to find him again.
Finally, the AirPods Pro 2 got touch control. This allows you to adjust the volume, among other things, by swiping over the stem. You can also easily turn the noise canceling on or off by holding the stem or skip to the next track with a quick squeeze. The touch controls take some getting used to, but it works well once you get the feel of it.
