9 tips and tricks for equipment and combat
Kratos is finally back and embarks on an arduous journey full of monsters, puzzles and lots of loot with his son Atreus in God of War (2018). We want to prepare you for all aspects of the game with our 9 gear and combat tips that would have helped us tremendously before starting the game.

Always look up!
Midgard and the other worlds in God of War are full of hidden elements that you can take advantage of. For example, there are always sacks hanging from the ceiling, lanterns and other containers that you can drop to the ground with a well-aimed ax throw.
There are always around the 300 Hacksilver (the in-game currency) for your cash account. We kept forgetting to look up in the game world and missed some of the bags.
They also have another use: you can drop them on the heads of enemies in the area. So always take a good look around before an attack and check whether you have the Level architecture to your advantage can use.
Invest in Bow Skills!
At the beginning we smiled at Atreus with his bow, with which he only caused marginal damage to enemies. But at the latest after the first skill improvements of his bow, this is one of the best weapons in the game. The advantage of this is that you can command attacks on enemies from a safe distance by pressing the square button.

But even more important than the damage is that stun damage, caused by Atreus’ arrows (bar under the health bar). If an enemy is stunned, you can run to it and, in most cases, kill it in one hit with the R3 key. Especially the nimble ones revenants is that useful. In the later course of the game, we could usually only rely on the arrows from Atreus. So build his bow at the forge as early as possible and unlock the new skills for him!
Atreus is a real help!
Atreus is definitely one of the more helpful sidekicks in video game history. Above all, you should always listen to what he has to say in quiet moments. If you stay in a certain area for a long time, Atreus draws your attention to items, puzzles or the next level exit. This is perfect if you haven’t discovered everything in one section yet.
But being is almost more important behavior in combat: If an opponent is close behind you, Atreus will always warn you, so you can quickly do a dodge roll. This is all the more helpful since the camera is generally placed very close behind Kratos.
Also, you should have his fighting skills Don’t underestimate it and upgrade accordingly. Once Atreus is choking enemies in battle, it’s the perfect opportunity to run over and charge up a heavy attack.
A real MetroidVania! Remember inaccessible places!
As the game progresses, you will repeatedly find paths blocked by red resin, chests overgrown with weeds, or hidden chambers. When you discover it for the first time, you won’t be able to do anything else here. This is intentional, because you first need certain skills to break down barriers or solve puzzles. You will only get these later in the game.
Our tip: Remember or write down the places in the game world where you initially get stuck. At the latest after completing the story you have all the necessary skills and can return here! The game world remains freely exploreable despite the partly tube-like levels and you can later visit any place that holds secrets.
Don’t walk past any Norn Chest without opening it!
Norn Chests are treasure chests with three blue rune symbols on the front. You can find the corresponding rune symbols in the area in the form of seals that you have to hit with an ax throw. This way the symbols on the chest will expire and you can eventually open it.
There is always either a Idunn apple or a horn with blood mead. Three apples found increase your maximum health and three horns with blood mead increase Kratos’ maximum rage. Therefore, you should always solve the rune puzzles in the chests immediately. Above all, the increased health is important here, since Kratos cannot endure much, especially at the beginning.
Keep an eye on your ability missions!
God of War rewards you for using different skills in battle. You switch for certain abilities such as the execution cleaver Skill Orders free the first time you use them in battle.
A lot of games from God of War have already been released. Do you remember when the games in our quiz saw the light of day?
If you then kill a certain number of enemies with this attack, you will get one after 25, 50 and 100 enemies XP amount as a reward. With 100 enemies, that’s 3,500 XP. So you unlock the skills for Kratos and Sohnemann faster. So use newly learned skills and keep checking the “Ability” section of the orders to complete them in a targeted manner.
Use the spells correctly!
Somewhat unhappily named, “spells” in God of War refer to enchanted items that you can slot into the sockets of high-end gear. These then give you certain bonuses, for example in the form of increased ax damage, more resistance to fire damage or damage bonuses against special enemy types.
You can also remove the sockets from the armor, which you should not forget when you put on a new armor. In addition, you should always adapt the spells according to the area in which you are moving. In Alfheim, for example, you will encounter many Dark Elves. So equip spells here that reduce the damage taken from this enemy type. You can find such spells directly in Alfheim. By the way, you can stack the effects of identical spells up to three times!
Gather the dew of the world tree!
We have already mentioned how important it is to explore the game world carefully. Here we want to draw your attention to the neon blue shining dew of the world tree attention that hangs from branches at certain points in the game world.
You can reach this by boat in the different worlds. Drive to the branches and let Atreus pluck it. You always get something from that Yggdrasil’s rope, which permanently increases a certain value of Kratos!
Upgrade your armour
In God of War, Kratos levels up based solely on your armor. Experience points do not improve your values, so you are dependent on regularly improving your armor or putting on new ones. This increases your level bar at the top right and you rise steadily. This is important in order to be able to take on stronger enemies later, who also all have a certain level.
Sometimes it makes more sense to improve existing armor than to create a new one. There are also sets that you can collect and upgrade. Each piece of armor also has a different focus on stats. Some rely on strength, defense, or a mix of all. So don’t put anything on, but adapt your equipment to your style of play.
