8x this is how you playfully involve your child in cleaning up

Cleaning up your house with a bored child (hanging on your leg) can be a hell of a job. To make it a little easier for you in times of panic, we asked professional organizer Martine Heeremans for useful tips.

Because involving your child in cleaning up already saves a lot of unnecessary stress. And it’s fun too.

1. Use songs

Put on your favorite song and agree that during that one song you have cleaned up the entire train track. Singing yourself is of course even more fun. Except for the neighbors.

2. Make it a competition

Is your child competitive? Bet he likes to win with this match? For example, divide the amount of stuff that needs to be cleaned up and use your stopwatch. You half, your child the other half. Do you have several children? Then let them work together.

3. Made-up game

Make cards with numbers on them. Your child may draw a card and must clear the number of things stated on the card. Finished? Then he may draw a new card. Get rid of all the cards as quickly as possible. Or you let them clean up all the barbies, cars, lego blocks, blue stuff. And, uh, encourage it.

4. Show what it yields

When everything has its own place, next time it’s much easier to find exactly what you want to play with. Your child will probably find this useful too, so point this out as well. This works much better than yelling “I’m sick of all this crap!”

5. Make it easy

An easy item, but is often forgotten: large bins, in which the items are stored by item, are really indispensable. Stick a picture, icon or label on each container, so that your child knows exactly what needs to be stored where.

6. Today everyone is free!

Agree that your child can leave all toys behind one day a week. The chance that you stand with your bare foot on such a terrible Lego block (aaarrgghhhh), is high, but oh well: who cares for once.

7. Catch up

Cleaning up together is a lot more fun. If your child has to clean up alone all the time, it comes across as a punishment and that is not motivating. Make it a contact moment for yourself and your child: catch up one-on-one.

8. Set a good example yourself: be positive

The most important of all. We don’t always feel like cleaning up, admittedly, but try to approach your child positively despite that. So not: “Man, you always leave everything behind your ass too.” Whistle a song while you throw all those toys into the treasure chest for the umpteenth time and maybe your child will see the fun in it after a while.
