8.5 million Dutch and Belgian phone numbers captured in WhatsApp hack

There has been a major leak at WhatsApp. It concerns 8.5 million Dutch and Belgian telephone numbers that have been captured with a leak.

A database full of numbers from WhatsApp users was captured in a hack. This concerns a total of 487 million telephone numbers of users worldwide. The database is offered for sale and contains approximately 8.5 million Dutch and Belgian telephone numbers. Since WhatsApp has more than 10 million users in the Netherlands, it is not about the complete list of users. It is unknown where the list comes from.

Looking at the list, it is noted that it only concerns telephone numbers that are shared. There is therefore no combination with other data such as names or other privacy-sensitive information. However, it cannot be ruled out that this information can later be linked to information by malicious parties themselves.
