6 wishes for the Mac update of 2021
The successor to macOS Big Sur is eager to be unveiled, but what can we expect from macOS 12? We list our wishes in this article.
Read on after the ad.
macOS 12 expectations: here’s what we’re looking forward to
macOS 12 is the new version of the Mac operating system that we will see on Monday, June 7. The update succeeds macOS Big Sur and will once again make some major changes. We list our wishes.
1. Custom Control Panel
Last year, Apple changed the design of macOS with Big Sur. That also resulted in a new Control Panel, which is mainly reminiscent of that of iOS. However, the options to set these to your own taste are still quite limited. So we hope macOS 12 gives us more freedom to make this Control Center even more functional.
For example, by letting developers create their own controls that you can add. The current version is even less laborious than the version on iOS, which has been around for much longer. So that could be better.
2. More smaller changes than last year
macOS Big Sur introduced a new design and kicked off the Mac era when Apple started making its own chips. Therefore, there is a very good chance (also based on rumours) that macOS 12 will be a lot smaller in terms of groundbreaking changes. Above all, count on minor tweaks to things that are already there, and performance optimizations.
3. Time Machine Backup in iCloud
Restoring a backup to an iPhone is very easy, because you can do this entirely via iCloud. It would be a big improvement if this option also became available for the Mac.
The only option you have now is to use Time Machine and connect an external hard drive. If your cloud storage is large enough, an iCloud option here would be a very nice addition.
4. Widgets on your desktop
iPadOS 15, like iOS 14, would have the ability to place widgets from apps anywhere on your home screen. With macOS and iPadOS increasingly converging, we wouldn’t be surprised if macOS 12 gets these widgets too. With iPhone and iPad apps now running on macOS, there are potentially hundreds of widgets ready to use.
You can then give this a permanent place on your desktop, so that you can see, for example, your next calendar appointment or how far your Apple Watch rings are already filled today.
5. Improved iOS App Performance
A few years ago, it became possible to run iPhone apps on the Mac. With the arrival of Apple’s M1 chip, this is now getting better and the range of macOS apps is slowly but surely increasing.
We assume that Apple will take major steps again this year to make these apps work even better, and to make it even easier for developers to make their app work on virtually all Apple devices. That is good news for you as a user, because applications are becoming more widely usable as a result.
6. Revealed Monday, downloadable this fall
Apple will likely unveil macOS 12 at the WWDC 2021 keynote next Monday night. The full presentation can be followed by everyone via a live stream.
Multiple betas will be released after the reveal on June 7th. These are first released for developers and later also for public testers to download. The final version appears in the fall, usually in October or November.
