This is how you prevent an iPhone from overheating: 6 tips
If you leave an iPhone or iPad in direct sunlight for a longer period of time, there is a good chance that the message ‘Temperature’ will appear on the screen. Then the device needs to cool down for a while before you can use it again. Very annoying, but the security mechanism is designed to prevent or limit damage to the device.
Your iPhone works best between 0 and 35 degrees and doesn’t like to be in an enclosed space, such as the glove compartment of your car. In direct sunlight, the temperature in a car can quickly rise to above 40 degrees, with all the consequences that entails.
An Apple device can also overheat if it’s not in the sun, but you accidentally forgot to turn off a camera or navigation app. This causes the device to become very hot, which in some cases also causes the Temperature screen to appear. However, that doesn’t happen that quickly.
My iPhone is overheating, now what?
If your iPhone gets too hot, a protection mechanism is automatically triggered. This ensures that you can temporarily not charge the iPhone, the flash of the camera does not work or certain connections are stopped. It may therefore happen that you are less accessible during this period.
It usually takes fifteen minutes for the device to cool down again. You do this by simply placing the iPhone in the shade. So don’t get started with ice cubes, refrigerators or cold water, because that is not necessary for anything. In fact – it is even bad for the battery.
Is the Temperature screen not yet visible, but is your iPhone very warm? Then prevent your iPhone from overheating with the quick tips below:
- Take the iPhone out of the sun and put it in a cool place in the shade;
- Don’t play games or use other intensive apps. This can cause the temperature to increase further;
- Temporarily turn on Airplane Mode to minimize the load on your iPhone;
- Turn your iPhone completely off for a while to speed up the cooling process.
How to prevent your iPhone from overheating
Of course, prevention is better than cure, and that includes an iPhone that overheats. Below we have highlighted six tips that will help you.
1. Keep your iPhone out of the sun
In hot weather, prevent your iPhone from coming into contact with direct sunlight, a hot (leather) chair or table, or other materials that heat up quickly (such as metal). Especially when it comes to longer periods, it is harmful to leave the device on a hot surface for too long.
2. Take off the case
If you charge your iPhone, remove any case. Also make sure that your iPhone is not in the sun when you charge it, but preferably in a cool place. Charging itself also provides some extra heat.
3. No counterfeit charger
Always use the original charger! A cheap counterfeit charger can cause your iPhone to get extremely hot while charging. Or worse, the charger catches fire.
4. Quit apps
Close all apps and wireless connections you’re not using. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and heavy apps (such as the camera or navigation) ensure that your iPhone gets hot faster. So don’t leave too many apps running in the background when you don’t actually need them.
5. Turn off the display
Use your navigation, but if you do not need the instructions on the screen, switch off the display. The screen is one of the biggest energy consumers of your iPhone and a lot of heat is generated in the process. It is therefore better to turn the screen off completely if you do not need an image.
6. Airplane Mode
If you don’t need your iPhone at all, turn on airplane mode or turn off the phone completely. You save the battery and prevent your iPhone from overheating.
