6 functions that the iPhone 14 really should have

The iPhone 13 is a fantastic phone, but it looks a lot like the iPhone 12. We therefore hope that Apple will pack a punch with the next version. So here’s our wish list for the iPhone 14. Apple, are we reading along?

Read on after the ad.

iPhone 14 wish list: we hope for these improvements

By calling the successor of the iPhone 12 the iPhone 13, it seems as if the device is a big step forward. That is not true. In reality, the iPhone 13 is more like an iPhone 12S.

How can Apple ensure that its successor really has something new to offer? In this article we give a first step by sharing our wish list for the iPhone 14.

1. Get rid of the iPhone notch

Since the iPhone X, which came out in 2017, new iPhones always look pretty much the same. Admittedly, the iPhone 13 has a smaller notch than the iPhone 12, but there were no revolutionary changes.

It is therefore high time for the iPhone to get a different design, starting with the notch. Let’s hope Apple bans this notch, or at least makes it significantly smaller.

How? For example, by copying competitors such as Samsung. This company hides selfie cameras by making a special hole in the screen of a phone. You get the best result, of course, by sticking the camera and sensors behind the screen, but the technology does not seem to be ready for that yet.

2. Copy iPhone (and Apple Watch) screen

Speaking of the screen, the iPhone 13 (and iPhone 13 mini) refreshes at 60 times per second by default. That is really not possible anymore. It is therefore only logical that next year’s entry-level Apple copies at least the refresh rate of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Current top devices have a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, or 120 times per second.

Now that we’re playing borrowing: it would be nice if the iPhone 14 got the always-on screen of the Apple Watch.

As the name suggests, such a screen always remains on. That’s nice, because you can always read important information from the display without unlocking your phone. For example, you see notifications of incoming messages, the weather and your activity rings.

3. Touch ID: return of an old acquaintance

In recent months, we wore mouth masks more often than we would like. When face masks started to dominate the streets, we soon found out how difficult this works with Face ID. After all, the front camera of the iPhone must be able to see your entire face in order to recognize you. The company came up with a trick by including the Apple Watch, but not everyone wears a smartwatch.

It would therefore be nice if the iPhone 14 gets Touch ID. This saves a lot of hassle, because this way you can unlock the device with a fingerprint: ideal for when you can’t use Face ID for a while.

The company also already has the blueprint in house, because the iPhone SE (from 2020) is equipped with Touch ID. This affordable device has the scanner in the power button below the screen. To save as much screen space as possible, we would prefer the iPhone 14 to integrate Touch ID in the power button, just like with the iPad mini 2021 and iPad Air 2020.

4. From Lightning to USB-C

One type of charger for your iPhone, iPad and MacBook. That doesn’t sound wrong, does it? It could very easily become a reality, as long as the iPhone switches from its own Lightning connection to USB-C, a much more popular standard.

This wish is not very unrealistic, because little by little Apple is letting go of its own charging standard. More and more products from the company can handle USB-C.

In addition, Apple would gain a foothold in Brussels, where pressure has been exerted for some time to switch to USB-C. This prevents a lot of electronic waste and brings a lot of convenience to consumers because they no longer have to work with all kinds of connectors. Therein lies the crux of the story: Apple’s own Lightning connection yields money.

5. Faster Charging

Speaking of charging, it’s also time to increase the iPhone’s maximum charging speed. The most expensive iPhone of the moment can charge a maximum of 27 Watts of power and is therefore completely full in about 90 minutes.

That’s not a bad score, but we’re not impressed. There are Android phones on the market that charge with 60, 90 or even 120 Watts of power and are therefore completely less full in 45 minutes.

6. Bouncer: Can the iPhone 14 be more sensitive?

Finally, a wish that will most likely never come true, but is too much fun to pass up. Graphic designer Andrea Copellino recently made a concept of, in his eyes, the perfect iPhone 14.

A striking addition was the pressure-sensitive volume knob. It works like the AirPods: you simply swipe your finger along the button to control the volume. This not only looks more elegant than the current physical volume knob, but also works more user-friendly.

On to the iPhone 14

The iPhone 13 series is actually only just in the shops, but the rumor mill around its successor is already in full swing. For example, according to analysts, the iPhone 14 will have a completely new design. The storage capacity would also be significantly increased. We hear from several sides that the iPhone 14 Pro will get 2 terabytes of storage.
