5GB of iCloud storage is way too little
The amount of free iCloud storage has never increased since the start of the online service. This online backup from Apple has been around for ten years since 2011 and it is impossible to imagine our current Apple life without it. You synchronize your photos, your messages and your videos between all your Apple devices with iCloud.
It is therefore high time that Apple listened to our wishes in this area. We think Apple should increase the 5GB of free iCloud storage to at least 64GB of free online data.
iCloud has been around for almost 12 years
In 2011, Apple also launched iOS 5 with iCloud together with the iPhone 4S. This was magic: all your photos from your iPhone were automatically on your iPad. Now, some 12 years later, this service is indispensable.
One artifact, however, continues to remind us of the (good) old days. The eternal message in your Settings app that your iPhone ‘cannot make a backup’. At least, for anyone who doesn’t want to subscribe to iCloud.
And Apple, let’s face it: 5GB of free storage is really not enough in 2022. While the memory of the iPhones and iPads has improved immensely and even moved from Intel to Apple Silicon, the free iCloud plan has remained the same. The storage of the iPhone 14 has already become considerably larger, but how is it possible that the free iCloud storage is lagging behind?
iCloud storage should be more than 5GB: ‘this is too little’
The iPhones can now record videos in 4K and one minute takes up 440MB. It is then very strange that Apple keeps the free subscription to iCloud so low. If you film for 10 minutes, you already have to pay for more iCloud storage.
The fact that 5GB of free iCloud storage is not enough becomes even more striking when you look at how much the storage of the paid variants has increased. Where in 2011 you could choose from 10GB, 20GB or 50GB for an additional price, today that is 50GB, 200GB and even 2TB. This while the 5GB of free iCloud storage will continue to exist.
‘every iPhone 64GB storage’ is that too much to ask?
But it’s time for change. The free plan must match the lowest amount of storage available on Apple’s products. For example, we find 64GB with the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPad Air 2022. You should then expect that your cloud storage also has that much space. You can also store a large amount of photos and videos.
In addition, there should also be more choice with the paid subscriptions. This makes it easier for users to purchase additional storage for a low monthly fee. Now this feature is only for the ardent (wealthy) Apple user. It’s the idea of the Freemiumtactics. That is why we say: Apple, 5GB of free iCloud storage is really far too little in 2022.
