Apple in 2021: 5 predictions in a row
Loyal iPhonedreaders already saw it coming: every first day of the year, we polish our crystal ball on iPhoned to predict what awaits us in the next twelve months.
1. Finally a new design for the MacBook and iMac
With the arrival of the M1 chip, the inside of the Mac is ready for the future, now the outside is. The MacBook has looked the same since 2016, and the iMac is even more ready for a makeover. The iMac still has a hopelessly outdated design, with hefty black screen edges that make the device unnecessarily large.
At the end of 2019, the MacBook already showed with the 16-inch MacBook Pro that the screen edges can be a lot narrower, but the smaller 13-inch variants have not shown this improvement so far. If the Mac also looks modern and runs on Apple’s own chips, it will be difficult to compete with these laptops and desktops.
2. Face ID comes to the Mac
So we’re counting on Apple going big this year with a brand new design that not only looks more modern with narrower bezels, but also does something functionally new.
The most logical addition is Face ID on the Mac. Due to the design of the iMac and MacBook, the distance between your face and the Face ID camera is optimal for a quick face scan. This means you can easily unlock your Mac, log in to an app or approve a payment.
3. Upgrades for all AirPods (except the Max)
2020 was a quiet year for the AirPods, but that will change in 2021. Everything indicates that both the regular AirPods and the AirPods Pro can count on a significant upgrade, which goes further than a new chip.
For example, the regular AirPods would take over the design of the AirPods Pro (without noise reduction) and the AirPods Pro get a different design without stalks protruding from your ears. The only AirPods from which we do not expect an upgrade is the AirPods Max; it is still too new.
4. A new design for the Apple Watch
The Apple Watch has been a regular part of Apple’s product line for years, but it still has the same design as the very first. Now that the technical steps are getting smaller, we expect that Apple will now also do something about the appearance of the smartwatch.
For example, the company can further distinguish the Apple Watch SE from the Watch Series 7. What that design will look like exactly is of course the big question. Would it finally happen that Apple heed the fans who ask for a round Apple Watch?
5. The return of Touch ID in the iPhone 13
As it looks now, four iPhones will appear again in September 2021. But the major innovation that the devices are introducing could just be an old acquaintance. For years, Apple has been testing ways to process a fingerprint scanner under the screen.
With that you can unlock your iPhone not only by looking at it, but also by simply placing your finger on the screen. By the time you’ve taken the device out of your pocket, it will have already recognized you.
