Steam: pure retro with an old C64 game
A classic Commodore 64 video game from the 80s has now found its way to Steam. MicroProse Soccer is a simple yet surprisingly in-depth soccer gamedeveloped by MicroProse and Sensible Software. It is a forerunner of the series, which later celebrated enormous success on the Amiga and the SNES as Sensible Soccer.
MicroProse Soccer is played from above. In the game, so-called banana shots are possible, in which you can influence the trajectory after the ball has already left your foot. In addition, games are possible during thunderstorms and rain. Goals are shown again in a repetition sequence, depending on the setting, before a rewind animation is played.
Retro: the Commodore 64
The C64 appeared in 1982. Despite the high price of around DM 1,500, the home computer was a huge success; nowadays the price, adjusted for inflation, is almost 1,500 euros. It is estimated that the Commodore 64 sold between 17 and 30 million times. That’s a wide range, but the console / PC hybrid did well. Games like MicroProse Soccer from 1988 benefited from this success, even if the C64 was known for its game copies on the well-known 5.25-inch floppy discs that circulated in numerous schoolyards.
You can currently secure a game for free on Steam:
The Commodore 64 had some legendary games such as Turrican, Giana Sisters, Kaiser and Maniac Mansion in its repertoire. Even if MicroProse Soccer doesn’t come to mind when you think of popular soccer games, the game had numerous features, who were ahead of their time.
When you download the game, you can compete against player or CPU opponents, compete in the World Cup or the International Challenge, choose from 29 different teams and even use a replay mode to re-watch scenes from the game.
