2013 Sony Xperia C

For this edition of ‘The forgotten smartphone’ we go back nine years. In 2013, the Sony Xperia C appeared, a stylish, yet striking device with some quirks. What can be said about this device?

Sony Xperia C

The Sony Xperia C was the Japanese manufacturer’s answer to devices in the middle segment. It was proof that a device with such a large screen did not have to go for the top prize. After all, the smartphone was equipped with a 5.0 inch TFT screen with a qHD resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. With this stylish device, Sony released its first smartphone equipped with a MediaTek processor. The advantage over the widely used Snapdragon processor at the time was that it was a quad-core processor, which also offered support for dual SIM. On board the Xperia C was the MediaTek MT6589 chipset, which was then still baked at 28nm.

As mentioned, Sony had released a stylish phone with the Xperia C, and that was already reflected in various details. Below the screen was a small strip that could light up with a new notification. It was an alternative to the notification light that we often saw on smartphones years ago. The Always On Display has now taken over this function. The Sony smartphone could handle the HSDPA network, had 1GB of RAM and offered (only) 4GB of internal storage space. This memory could be expanded with a memory card with a maximum size of 32GB.

For the photos, the Sony Xperia C was equipped with an 8 megapixel camera on the rear, along with an LED flash, HDR and a physical shutter button that you could find on the side of the smartphone. Filming was possible in 1080p Full HD. You could take selfies with the 0.3 megapixel VGA camera. The device of the Japanese brand appeared with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and had a 2390 mAh battery. If you chose the Sony Xperia C, you could choose from purple, black and white.

Sony Xperia C summarized in 3 points:

  • Notification strip below the screen
  • 4GB of internal memory
  • First Sony with MediaTek chipset
