ZTE was able to implement a face recognition system under the display

The Chinese company ZTE presented a face recognition system at the MWC Shanghai trade fair, which is directly below the display, similar to fingerprint readers or a selfie camera. The result is a frameless front of the phone where there is no cutout or shot. For ZTE, this is another success with the implementation of technologies under the display. Already last year, it was the first company to mass-produce and sell phones with a selfie camera under the display. Now they are adding technology to the display, which normally needs a large cut-out, as we could see with older Huawei Mate phones, where 3D face scanning is located, and of course also iPhones from Apple, where Face ID is located.

We may already see the face recognition system under the display on the ZTE Axon 30 Pro phone

ZTE was able to find a compromise between being able to “pass enough information about the user’s face” when scanning through the display, and at the same time not to disturb the quality of the display itself too much. The pixel density has been increased in the area where the sensors for 3D scanning are located. The fineness of the surrounding display is 400 ppi and the refresh rate has also been increased to 120 Hz.

According to the statement, it already is 3D scanner under the display safe enough to verify mobile payments. It also supports the ability to create 3D models and augmented reality that can be used for selfie shots. So far, it has not been announced which models will receive this technology. But speculation suggests that it could already be soon when the ZTE Axon 30 Pro phone was introduced. Let’s hope that the face recognition system under the display will work as promised by ZTE and will be implemented in other phones in the coming years.
