YouTube Premium Lite: silent, but quite attractive

Without fanfare, YouTube launched a new version of YouTube Premium called Lite. They should have advertised that a bit more, because it sounds very attractive.

You know it: you’re just watching a video of your favorite YouTuber and suddenly you are interrupted by a woman who asks if you suffer from fungus in your private area. Very annoying and increasingly the new reality. In short, it’s a kind of freedom utopia: the more ads in the middle of your video that are annoying to the viewer, the more money the creator generates. The YouTube revenue model is becoming increasingly cumbersome and many YouTubers just want to make a profit.

YouTube Premium

You as a user have a solution. For only 11.99 euros per month you can upgrade to YouTube Premium. Then you will enjoy ad-free videos, but also get access to download videos so you don’t have to stream them from your data plan, the ability to close the app without your video stopping playing, and access to YouTube Music. 144 euros per year is quite an expensive joke, but then you get something. Maybe a little too much.

YouTube Premium Lite

YouTube has quietly added Premium Lite to the list of subscriptions. That was discovered by a Redditor from Scandinavia and a Dutchman who shared his findings on Resetera. Both were just browsing the possibilities for YouTube Premium, the user on Resetera wanted to cancel his regular YouTube Premium, after which YouTube itself recommended the Lite version. As below, the option is now also available if you just look it up.

What is YouTube Premium Lite? Simple: just YouTube without ads, for just under half the money. It costs 6.99 euros per month to get the stripped-down version of YouTube Premium. This was not widely announced by YouTube: you just have to come across it so to speak. Why YouTube did not announce it on a large scale is unknown, but we can take a chance: they want to tempt you as much as possible to buy the expensive version of 11.99 euros per month.

Attractive, but…

Too bad, because YouTube Premium Lite sounds quite attractive. Just no more hassle with ads and everything else remains the same. However, 6.99 per month is still not extremely cheap (for example, you also buy Amazon Prime or almost Netflix, two much more extensive services) and a number of Premium features from YouTube, especially being able to continue playing while not using the app, is nice to have.

Anyway, you can purchase YouTube Premium Lite if you find YouTube Premium just a bit too intense. Ad-free viewing is guaranteed.
