You like Google’s direction with the Pixel 6

On Monday, Google broke the trend of keeping all information about its new phones until the Made by Google event in October. We got to see the six Pixel 6 colors for the first time. Google also released information about its Tensor SoC, its ‘own’ chipset. Last week, readers got the chance to give their opinion about the Pixel 6, this time you can read the results.

“We knew we didn’t have what it took to be in the high-end segment in the past,” Rick Osterloh, VP Devices and Services at Google, told The Verge. According to the CEO, that will change with the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. That change brings the Google Pixel series in line with the high-end phones from Samsung, Huawei and Apple, including price tag. No official details about the suggested retail prices have been released yet. Osterloh spoke to The Verge about a premium priced product. The suggested retail prices are likely to be around $1,000.

At that price, consumers on the Pixel 6 (Pro) get a Google Tensor SoC and a design that looks nothing like any other phone. On the back we find a black band, containing the new camera sensors. With that, Google does away with the square camera module of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 series. In the camera module that spans the entire width of the phone, we find two cameras on the Pixel 6, while the Pixel 6 Pro gets three cameras. The third camera, which is not on the Pixel 6 (non-Pro), is a telephoto camera with four times optical zoom.

The design is further notable for its two-tone design; the glass panels below the black strip in front of the cameras always have a different color than the glass panel above the module. Google is developing ‘six color options’. Other details about the phones are still very scarce. We do know that, like other years, the phone will not land in the Netherlands or Belgium – if you want to purchase a Pixel 6 (Pro), you have to go to a web store with gray imports.

AW Poll, this is what you think

Google’s choices for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro already seem to appeal to Androidworld readers. About 32.3 percent of the readers who voted in our AW Poll said that the Pixel 6 was top notch. Not everyone immediately draws the same conclusion: 45 percent of the voters indicate that they are predominantly positive. Finally, there is a small section that joins the ‘flop’ side. That applies to 6.2 percent of the votes.

AW Poll: You like Google's direction with the Pixel 6

This means that Google’s (new) Pixel 6 is mostly positively received. Whether this will also result in a lot of Pixel sales once the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro enter the market probably depends on the price that online stores catch. Will the Google Pixel 6 be on your wish list, or is the phone simply too expensive for that? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
