you have a lot of faith in backcovers

Using a phone without any kind of protection is a bold choice. More and more telephones are partly or even entirely made of glass, which has the property of breaking as soon as it falls on (hard) ground. Since glass phones are so fragile, we were curious how you protect your phone. Find out with us in the AW Poll results.

Protect your phone

Just let your finger slide across the screen of your phone. The fact that it feels so smooth is due to the use of a glass protection layer over the LCD or (AM)OLED panel. So it gives a nice feeling, but of course it also has some downsides. If glass comes into contact with a hard material, this can cause scratches on the screen. In addition, glass can break if you drop it on a hard material, such as paving stones. Whether this also happens if you drop your phone on the floor depends on several factors.

One of those factors is the height from which your phone falls. The lower the point from which you drop the phone, the less likely it is to damage the screen. However, that explanation is a bit too generic. Whether glass breaks has to do with the pressure that the porous material receives from the fall, and that in turn depends on the angle at which your phone hits the ground. If the phone falls on its back, it has a large surface to handle the pressure. If your phone falls on one of its four corners, the pressure is already harder to distribute and your screen is more likely to break.

Fixing a broken screen can be quite expensive

Furthermore, elements such as the temperature in your environment, and that of your telephone, play a role. Higher temperatures, for example, mean that there is more pressure on the glass, which expands due to the higher temperatures. Not to mention, of course, is the use of products that claim to protect your phone, such as a case and screen protector. Depending on the type of case and the type of screen protector, they can actually work wonders in the event of a fall, but the mantra: prevention is better than cure, remains valid here too. So don’t rely on the case, but try to drop your phone as little as possible.

AW Poll, this is what you do

You have little influence on some of the above factors. If your phone falls on a hot day and at the wrong angle, it can just go wrong. At the same time, you can reduce the risk if you purchase a sturdy case. You realize that all too well, according to the AW Poll that appeared on Tuesday. About 41 percent of the readers who voted in the poll say they use a back cover themselves. Another 19 percent of the votes came in for the use of a flip cover (bookcase).

You also protect the screen from falling, and preferably with a glass version, according to 18 percent of the readers. Insuring your phone against a fall is not popular – only 3 percent of the readers who voted took out such insurance for their phone. You can of course also ask yourself whether such insurance is worth it, especially given the costs and the vague conditions to which you are bound by the insurance.

Do you have specific manufacturers of cases and screen protectors that you like to buy, or do you prefer to buy the cheapest protective equipment available? Be sure to let us know in the comments below this article.
