you can open Google Maps on your phone during Android Auto
It appeared to be a security setting, but Google has discontinued it. It was previously not possible to use Google Maps on your phone when your device was used for Android Auto. That will now change, so that you can look up something in a slightly easier way.

Android Auto
The problem of using Google Maps within Android Auto is that it is just a bit slower to look something up. You are typing on your infotainment screen in the car and that is just a little less pleasant. It is often much faster to look it up on your phone and then use it via Android Auto. Previously you had to use all kinds of lifehacks for this, such as ensuring that the destination was in the recent locations so that you could easily tap it, but now you can also do this on your phone while you have already made a connection with your car.
It is still not advisable to set up your navigation while driving, but it is faster to look it up on your smartphone if you are still stationary and already have a connection. The feature is here now, and is actually back: it popped up earlier this year and then disappeared again, but thankfully it’s making a comeback now. This is not only good news for convenience, but also for functionality: Google Maps on a smartphone can do more than within Android Auto. For example your list of places to visit or more data about places in general.
