Xbox turns 20: special controller to celebrate

Microsoft

Microsoft made a special controller because the Xbox is 20 years old. And that has to be celebrated!

The controller will go on sale exactly 20 years after the release of the original Xbox. On November 15, 2001, Microsoft released the original Xbox. This was a big step for the company and it changed the console landscape forever. Twenty years later, Microsoft plans to celebrate the anniversary by releasing a handful of translucent accessories, including the Xbox Series X/S controller.

Twenty years, time flies. The translucent design is a reference to the translucent controllers that Microsoft shipped with the original Xbox. A handy touch is that Microsoft has made the internal components silver to make them more visible. The Xbox’s signature green color is used for accent details. Including the rear handles. Beyond the visual, thankfully it’s functionally the same as any other Xbox Wireless controller you can buy from Microsoft. Expect Bluetooth for PC and mobile pairing, button mapping support, and a better d-pad than on previous Xbox generations of controllers.

You can pre-order the 20th Anniversary Special Edition controller from the Microsoft Store starting today. This is for America, when Europe will follow is unknown. If you can’t justify adding another controller to your collection, Microsoft is also planning to release a 20th Anniversary Special Edition Stereo Headset. This one doesn’t look as cool as the controller, but the headset is certainly not ugly.
