World Mobile No Day is approaching. Are you willing to put your smartphone away?

February 6 is approaching again – the world day without a mobile phone, which we commemorate every year. It is almost impossible for a modern person living in the developed world to spend a day without his smartphone. On average, we look at our devices approximately 100 times a day. The mobile phone is no longer just a tool for texting or making phone calls.

Although our website is focused on mobile technologies, we realize that people today depend on their smartphones. Therefore, putting the phone down for a few hours will definitely not harm anyone.

The Office for the Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RÚ) also commemorates World Mobile Day.

“It’s an opportunity to reflect on how the mobile phone interfered with people-to-people communication and influenced their behavior.”

In Slovakia, we have approximately 6.2 million active SIM cards used to provide mobile phone service.

A little history

The beginning of mobile communication in Slovakia dates back to 1991, when the first mobile call was made in the analogue mobile network NMT 450. Subsequently, the commercial operation of the network began. From the beginning, it was not possible to choose a mobile operator.

Mobile phones were initially placed in motor vehicles, and later portable devices also came. For today’s conditions, they were big, difficult and shapeless. Only companies and wealthier citizens had mobile phones at that time. The interesting thing is that Received calls were also charged. The first GSM network was launched in Slovakia in 1997.

At that time, Slovaks had a choice of two mobile operators. The third operator received a permit in 2006 and the fourth in 2013. More modern solutions were gradually added to the second generation of mobile networks – 3G, 4G and most recently 5G, which is already available in several locations in Slovakia.

The first operator to launch its 5G network was 4ka. This happened in the second half of 2019. Since December 2019, the network has been available to 4 customers. It is located in Banská Bystrica and is only one transmitter.

The O2 operator launched a 5G network in October last year in Bratislava. Specifically, certain sections of the Petržalka, Ružinov, Dúbravka and Karlova Ves districts are covered. Telekom also joined at the end of last year. The pink operator’s 5G network is currently available for about half of the entire capital area. In 2021, operators will expand their 5G network with new areas.

With regard to 5G networks, various conspiracy theories are spreading all over the world, but also in Slovakia. We choose the best:
