With this method, you sort out the chaos in your head

Anyone who lies in bed in the evening and has sleepless nights because of circling thoughts can systematically get the chaos in the head under control with the braindump method. That’s behind it.

The digitization of the world of work is accompanied by a phenomenon in everyday work that leads to problems. We are talking about the increasing concentration of work, which often creates stress and pressure and can be the trigger for mental illness. In fact, more and more routine tasks are being automated. As a result, we only work on complex things and the carousel of thought in our head is constantly running at full speed. During working hours, however, sometimes taking a break from less strenuous work – such as filing files – while thinking things through and sorting out your own thoughts is extremely important for your health, but also for productivity.

Anyone who regularly lies in bed in the evening and thinks about what he or she has to do the next day is basically already confronted with the problem. These thoughts should happen during or tend to happen at the end of working hours and not in the bedroom, where the brain should actually shut down and regenerate. For these people, the American entrepreneur, author and coach Michael Hyatt one hintIn order not to lose the overview and at the same time to get calm in the thinking apparatus – we are talking about the so-called braindump method, which can relieve the mind not only in a professional but also in a private context. The impulse magazine has about it reported in a guidebook.

Solve thought chaos with the braindump method

Put simply, it’s about writing down everything that’s floating around in your head and getting it out of it. The English term means something like “to empty the brain” or, more drastically, “to dispose of the brain”. It is important not to do this on the computer, where email, social media or messenger notifications can disrupt the braindump process, but rather to use pen, paper and a quiet room. Michael Hyatt recommends that you systematically put your thoughts on paper according to the following criteria: 1. Professional to-dos, 2. Personal to-dos, 3. Annoyances, 4. Worries and 5. Ideas. The principle takes some time, but users would feel much easier afterwards.

“Everything that floats in your head has to go.”

In real life it can look like this: 1. Professional to-dos: “Send offer to customer XX.” 2. Personal to-dos: “Go to the daughter’s school performance.” a concept excited. ”4. Worries:“ I spend too little time with my daughter. ”And 5. Ideas:“ Let assistants draw up draft proposals in the future. ”Such a list can be much longer individually – as a rule, it will be even. According to Michael Hyatt, the very fact that people brood in bed in the evening shows that too many thoughts are circulating that can no longer be dealt with in everyday life. Incidentally, a braindump list has no limits in terms of content. Everything that is floating in the head has to go.

In order to be able to focus again, it is often enough to write down the thoughts and then simply ignore the braindump slip. However, if you not only want to get the thoughts out of your head, but also want to sort them, you should develop a plan in the second step. Above all, the to-dos can then be prioritized – for example with the help of the so-called Eisenhower matrix. It is a visual tool to sort tasks into four categories: A stands for “important and urgent”, B stands for “important and not urgent”, C stands for “urgent and not important” and D stands for “not urgent and not important. ”If the tasks are prioritized, they can be processed in a more concentrated manner.

According to Michael Hyatt, it is advisable not to take the second step immediately. After the brain is emptied, it should be able to calm down, advises the expert. The next day would be the perfect moment to unravel your thoughts. Sometimes it also helps to get support and to discuss what has been put on paper – for example with the boss, the colleague or – if private areas are also affected – with the partner or among friends. The American is aware that brain dumping initially discourages many users because of the time required, but he adds that the time invested is not wasted. Especially not if the result is a good night’s sleep.
