With Surf-Video, Mark Zuckerberg provides a meme template

On the US national day, Mark Zuckerberg surfed Instagram with Stars and Stripes across a lake – there were so many snappy sayings and allusions.
While President Joe Biden was celebrating US Independence Day on July 4th with a relaxed garden party with fireworks, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg came up with a slightly different staging: The 37-year-old posted a video on his Instagram account with the signature: “Happy July 4th!” For a little more than a minute you can see the entrepreneur riding across a lake on a hydrofoil surfboard, a board with a special electric drive, with both hands clutching the handle of a waving American flag. The sequence in front of the picturesque sunset with the song “Country Roads” by John Denver is musically underlined.

“Someone told Mark Zuckerberg to act normally for July 4th,” jokes Philip Lewis, Senior Editor at the Huffington Post, on Twitter about the action – and he’s not alone in his ridicule. “I wish they could raise John Denver from the dead just so he could sue Mark Zuckerberg for it,” another user writes. “Zuckerberg has been practicing for a time when most of the big cities are under water,” says another. There are also some montages for the clip, for example the tech billionaire is on it eaten by a shark.
On Instagram a commenter under the video also refers to the lawsuit brought by the American antitrust authorities FTC against Facebook, which was dismissed at the end of June: “If the antitrust lawsuit against you is dismissed by a judge. Let’s go Zuck! ”Had the lawsuit been successful, the group might have been forced to spin off Whatsapp and Instagram – whether Zuckerberg would have gone surfing so relaxed is questionable.

As early as July 2020, Mark Zuckerberg involuntarily surfed high on the meme wave: his white sunscreen face while doing water sports invited the internet community to numerous mocking interpretations. From the joker as Batman’s opponent to the pantomime, the most varied of comparisons came up, some also saw parallels to the ghost “Without Face” from the anime “Spirited Away”. In the end, Zuckerberg took the numerous allusions with humor – however, he has not yet reacted to the mockery of his Independence Day posting.
