Windows 10 gets fix for hard drive wrecking bug

Windows 10 is dealing with another persistent bug, one that can destroy your hard drive.

And no, smoke does not suddenly come out of your hard drive. Do not worry. What the bug does is put your hard drive out of action via software. The problem is actually pretty silly. All you have to do to trigger the bug is to look at an icon on Windows 10, then the hard drive gets upset.

Malicious people can hide the icon with a shortcut in a folder, for example. You open the innocent folder and unsuspectingly get to see that icon. Analysts Will Dormann have discovered that the problem has potentially been hiding in Windows 10 for three years, but the issue has only recently come to light. Dormann has previously uncovered an NTFS-related issue, but that problem has still not been solved by Microsoft after two years.

A spokesperson for Microsoft says to The Verge that he is aware of the problems. There will be a future update that will address this problem, the US tech company said in a response. Until then, Microsoft encourages users to be cautious about opening unknown files.
