Will this iPhone technology also come to your Mac (book)?
According to an Apple analyst, it is a logical next step for your Mac to follow in the footsteps of your iPhone a little more with the addition of FaceID.
As fast as mobile phones keep shooting through innovations, time seems to stand still with laptops. Not so much because of the innovations in laptops themselves, but the idea of the laptop has been unchanged for years. Screen, keyboard, hinge and a trackpad. Just an observation – not an analysis.
iPhone technology
Nowadays, Apple has a number of nice gimmicks on the MacBook series, such as the TouchBar (an interactive touchscreen instead of F keys) and a handy gimmick that can now also be found on every MacBook: TouchID. This method of unlocking via fingerprint is now also linked to MacBooks, which is very handy.
Further
Nice, but now the iPhones are one step further. Except for the SE, every new iPhone now has FaceID. This scans your face instead of your finger. Mind you, this came at the expense of TouchID. Anyway, to come back to those MacBooks: actually they are now at the level where the iPhones are already out. If it’s up to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, that’s about to change.
FaceID for Mac
Gurman expects that FaceID for Mac is coming. Facial recognition will become the standard for all Apple products and the company is slowly moving towards FaceID for everything. All iPhones, all iPads and therefore also Macs and MacBooks. It’s been a debate for years: is FaceID better than TouchID? Gurman does not comment on this, but he does say that Apple also wants to use FaceID for Augmented Reality, for example. FaceID kills two birds with one stone in that regard, whether it is better than TouchID or not. They’re not official rumors, but Gurman says it’s a logical next step.
“Shortly”
It is not expected from Gurman that every announced Mac or MacBook will receive FaceID from now on. According to him, it is about MacBooks in the coming years. According to Gurman, TouchID will also continue to play a role in Apple products. For example, the rumor that TouchID will play a role in iPhones again by integrating this into the home button or under the screen. Time will tell… (via Bloomberg)
