WhatsApp plays dirty game, returns to threats

After months of yo-yoing, it appears that users can refuse the terms of WhatsApp without consequences. What now?!

Once again, the story surrounding WhatsApp and the new terms of use is getting more confusing. Users who wouldn’t accept the terms were slowly but surely locked out of features. At least that’s what WhatsApp said, but now they’re coming back to that. Obviously, Facebook’s messaging service has no idea what it actually wants. Or is it going exactly as they would like?

You can simply refuse WhatsApp conditions

After May 15, users would slowly but surely lose features if they refuse the new WhatsApp terms. That should have happened now, but once again the chat service changes the course completely. In a statement to TheVerge, they now say that nothing will happen to fighters.

Based on recent conversations with various authorities and privacy experts, we want to make it clear that we do not limit functionalities for how WhatsApp works. This also applies to those who have not accepted the latest update.

WhatsApp’s statement

The yo-yoing policy probably makes little difference to WhatsApp, since almost everyone has already accepted the new terms and it doesn’t seem like you can still refuse.

In short, WhatsApp is playing a dirty game here. There was a lot of criticism of the new policy of the messaging service. Still, many agreed to the conditions. Subsequently, the possible repercussions for doubters were postponed again and again. More and more people went that way.

Now that Facebook can use enough data from WhatsApp users, they are playing the ‘sympathy’ card. After all, it is no longer mandatory; you suddenly have a choice. If, on the other hand, they are really that altruistic, they should also give users the option to opt out of the new WhatsApp terms, right?!
