WhatsApp introduces payment function in India

Contactless payment is now possible in many ways, with your debit card, mobile phone or wearable. There are also many apps and smartphone manufacturers that have such a payment option, such as Samsung, Google and the chat app WeChat. WhatsApp is also working on this and is rolling out a payment function in its chat app in India.

So most of us use the mobile banking app to pay contactless at the checkout. You simply hold your phone against the payment terminal and the payment is done in no time. This way you no longer need cards or cash.

In Asia, the chat app WeChat is mainly used for this. You may not know this app, but you can’t ignore it in China itself. It is not only the main messaging service, but also a very popular app for contactless payments and for other dubious purposes. WhatsApp now also has a payment function in its chat app and residents of India can get started with it first. They see a new icon in the input bar in a conversation with a currency symbol.

This button is now available for Indian users who have installed version 2.21.17 of WhatsApp beta for Android. Brazil may be the next country to see the same button for their currency in WhatsApp. These WhatsApp users can therefore make payments in stores via the chat app.
