WhatsApp introduces end-to-end encrypted backups
WhatsApp is now a bit more secure. With the backups, you can now also choose end-to-end encryption, which you can upload with the extra security layer to, for example, your Google Drive or iCloud.
End-to-end encryption backup
WhatsApp has announced end-to-end backups. This should make using the app a bit safer. Five years ago, end-to-end encryption was already added to the messages by default. They say more than 100 billion messages are protected every day, from more than 2 billion users.
With end-to-end encrypted messages, both sent and received messages are stored on the device. Creating an encrypted backup is an additional option, after which the backup can be uploaded to Google Drive or iCloud. The encrypted backup can be protected with a password of your choice or a 64-digit encryption key. This is only known to you, and cannot be retrieved by others in any way. The key is needed to unlock backups.
From now on, the feature is slowly being rolled out. It may take a while until everyone is offered the position.
