WhatsApp fixes a problem that should never have existed

WhatsApp is really serious about data protection. While the competition is making fun of the security gap, WhatsApp is working on a solution and has already taken the first concrete measures. This eliminates a disadvantage of the messenger that should never have existed.

WhatsApp encrypts backups in the cloud

Hardly anyone knew, but the problem had been around for years. While WhatsApp encrypts normal chats end-to-end, the backups in the cloud have always been a point of attack. If you stored your backup at Google or Apple, the data was there available there unprotected. Photos, videos and text messages could be tapped in the worst case. This is exactly what WhatsApp wanted to solve and has now done it (source: WABetaInfo).

But the pleasure was short-lived. Just one day later, WhatsApp removed the function in the beta version for Android directly (source: WABetaInfo). It is quite possible that problems arose with the encryption, so that the company had to put on the brakes first. Unfortunately, we couldn’t try the function, so we don’t know whether the now encrypted backups have been lost. But it is clear that the Function is about to be released. After all, we now know that WhatsApp is very advanced in development. It will be available on both Android and iOS.
