WhatsApp announces migration tool: this is how it works

WhatsApp has announced a new feature that we’ve heard a lot about before. It is the migration tool that allows you to easily migrate your message history between iPhone and Android and vice versa.

WhatsApp with migration tool

The migration tool has been officially announced by WhatsApp. The new feature makes it possible to migrate your entire message history between Apple iPhone on iOS and Android, and vice versa. Migrating messages is not limited to text messages. WhatsApp emphasizes that voice messages, photos and videos are also included in this process.

So the new migration tool will transfer your chat history from one operating system to another. When another device is set, messages can be transferred via a cable. Since Apple uses the Lightning connector, a USB-C to Lightning cable must be used.

Steps

For the time being, the function only works on Samsung devices with Android 10 and higher. To exchange calls between iOS and Android, the Samsung Smart Switch app is now also required. WhatsApp lists the steps for migrating from iPhone to Samsung;

  1. Turn on your Samsung device and connect it to your iPhone via a cable when prompted.
  2. Follow the instructions of Samsung Smart Switch.
  3. When prompted, scan the QR code displayed on the new device with the iPhone camera.
  4. Tap on Start on your iPhone and wait for the process to complete.
  5. Continue setting up your new Samsung device.
  6. Open whatsapp on the home screen and sign in with the same phone number you use on your old device.
  7. Tap on Import when prompted and wait for the process to complete.
  8. Complete the activation of your new device, and the chats are ready for you.

For now, the functionality only works for Samsung devices. WhatsApp says more Android devices should soon be compatible with WhatsApp’s migration tool.
