what’s new and how do you get it?

A new firmware update has been released for the AirTag. New features and improvements are made regularly with updates. Apple won’t say what exactly is new, but we do have an idea.

What’s new in the AirTag firmware update?

Unfortunately, we don’t know for sure what’s new. Apple has not released any release notes for the AirTag firmware update. What we do know is that the firmware version has been updated to 1.0.291.

Apple also released new software in June. A number of changes were made to this to address concerns and issues about stalking with AirTags. What we suspect is that this (smaller) update still has to do with this and Apple has made further adjustments.

Due to the vicissitudes surrounding possible stalking via the AirTag, Apple is developing an Android app. Users of an Android device can use this to check whether, for example, there is an AirTag in their luggage. The users of an iPhone could already do that, because you automatically receive a notification when a ‘strange’ AirTag is nearby. Probably the latest AirTag firmware update has something to do with this as well.

This is how you check the firmware version of your AirTag

To check if you have the AirTag firmware update, open the ‘Find My’ app on your iPhone. Tap “Objects” at the bottom of the window and tap the “AirTag”. Then tapping the battery icon will show you the firmware version. You see 1.0.291, then you have the latest version running.

Update AirTag firmware

Unfortunately, it is not possible to force the update for your AirTag. Usually you just have to be patient before you get the latest firmware. You can make sure that the update runs smoothly.

Make sure your AirTag is paired with your iPhone. You do this (again) in the ‘Find my’ app. Tap ‘Objects > Add object’ and then choose ‘Add AirTag’.

In addition, your AirTag must be close to your iPhone. Just like updating your Apple Watch, the AirTag must be able to connect to your phone. Therefore, simply place the AirTag next to your iPhone when you are not using it.
