What about road tax on hybrid cars and electric vehicles?

Motor vehicle tax – abbreviated mrb – must be paid for every vehicle that is registered. This is also known as road tax. In 2023, the mrb must provide the national government and the provinces with an amount of 6.3 billion euros. There are a number of exceptions where you do not have to pay road tax. For example, cars that have been in use for more than 40 years do not have to pay an MRB. Police, fire and ambulance vehicles also fall under the exception rule.

How much you spend on road tax depends on a number of factors. The heavier your car is, the more road tax you have to pay. After all, you put more stress on the road surface. The type of fuel your vehicle runs on also affects the amount of tax to be paid. In this blog you can read more about the reduced road tax for (second-hand) hybrid and electric vehicles.

What is the road tax for hybrid vehicles?

Do you own a plug-in hybrid car? Then you will receive a 50% discount on the motor vehicle tax. This discount only applies to vehicles with a minimum CO2 emission of a maximum of 50 grams per kilometre. The government has extended the advantageous rate up to and including 2024.

These hybrid cars are available with or without a plug and all run on electricity and on petrol or diesel. When the battery of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is empty, it can be charged via a plug and charging point. The big difference with a hybrid car without a plug is that the battery of the electric motor is then only charged by the petrol or diesel engine. By being able to charge the PHEV battery yourself, you can easily drive more electric kilometers. For example, hybrid cars contribute to a better climate and environment. With the cheaper road tax, the national government wants to encourage the use of these cleaner and more economical vehicles.

Electric cars and the benefit on road tax

At the moment, you do not have to pay purchase tax or motor vehicle tax for electric vehicles. There is also less addition for a company car. This percentage is 16 percent for both hydrogen cars and solar cell cars.
