Watching movies and TV series via the PlayStation Store will soon no longer be possible. Since everyone has a streaming subscription, the impact will be not too bad.

Sony will stop selling and renting movies and TV series through the PlayStation Store, according to a blog post. PlayStation users will be able to rent and purchase on-demand movies and shows until later this year. After that, products that have already been purchased will still be available. On the other hand, it is clear why Sony is canceling the service and they know it themselves.

PlayStation Store is scrapping movies

From August 21, 2021 it will no longer be possible to buy or rent films and series via the PlayStation Store. For a long time, Sony offered on-demand content through the virtual store. Microsoft is doing the same through their platforms.

On the other hand, it can be assumed that this service will no longer be very attractive in most countries. After all, everyone has a subscription to a streaming service. Or in the case of Dutch Netflix users, everyone knows someone they can share it with for free.

At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we strive to deliver the best possible entertainment experience for PlayStation fans and that means our offering evolves with customers. We have seen significant growth in the number of PlayStation fans receiving subscription or ad-supported entertainment streaming services on our consoles.

Sony in the blog post

The Japanese company, of course, refers to support for apps such as Twitch, Netflix and Disney +. Meanwhile, there are also plenty of on-demand services that just work on PlayStation. Think of YouTube and Amazon, which sell and rent movies and series for a fee. Sony apparently could not compete with that competition and will therefore be removing films and series from the PlayStation Store from 31 August.
