iPhone 14 Pro with always-on screen
There have been rumors for a long time that the iPhone 14 Pro will get an always-on screen. That makes it possible to already view information on the screen – such as the time, notifications and widgets – even though the display is actually turned off.
Several references to that always-on screen were already found in the betas of iOS 16, but the new beta 4 contains the largest proof yet. The built-in wallpapers of iOS 16 beta 4 have a special mode that seems to be intended for always-on screens.

Made this discovery 9to5Mac. They delved deep into the code of iOS 16 and found an extra dark mode with many black pixels for almost all wallpapers of iOS 16. This video gives you a good impression of the animation.
A lot of black is a requirement for an always-on screen. That depends on the technology behind it. An OLED screen does not consume energy if it has to show the color black. In combination with a low image refresh rate, this makes it possible to simply leave the screen on with somewhat more limited information.
Looks like Apple Watch
The wallpapers in iOS 16 remind us of the Apple Watch with its always-on screen. Here too, there is a dark version for many watch faces. This makes an always-on screen just a bit more chic than with a completely black background. We find that on a lot of Android phones that have always-on screens for some time.
