If you think that the Steam Deck, Valve’s new hybrid console, will only be intended to run small, resource-hungry indie games, think again. In a new video published by our colleagues from the IGN site, Valve has revealed a lot of information on the technical characteristics and the hardware of the console.

In its statements, the American company assures that it will be possible to launch any game from the Steam library on the Steam Deck, whether it is a recent title or a big AAA of the. Battlefield 2042 ilk for example. Nevertheless, the manufacturer admits that it was necessary to go through many prototypes before obtaining such performances.

We’ve looked at various games from the Steam catalog over the past few years, but the real test for us was the games that came out last year (ndrl: in 2020). They did not perform well on the previous types of prototypes and architectures we were testing ”, recognizes Pierre-Loup Griffais, developer at Valve.

The Steam Deck capable of running the entire Steam catalog

Still according to him, the console has now reached a sufficient level of development to allow him to launch any game and run it satisfactorily. “This is the first time that we have achieved the level of performance required to really run the latest generation of games without a hitch. All of the games that we wanted to make playable are – actually – the entire Steam library. We couldn’t find anything that we couldn’t run on this device, or that it couldn’t handle ”, outbid Pierre-Loup Griffais.

In that same video, Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat disclosed additional information on the hardware of the Steam Deck. He confirmed again that the machine has a new AMD APU (a term created by AMD to designate a combination of GPU and CPU) which offers performance similar to Ryzen 3000 desktop processors and the latest graphics cards from the Red Team, the Radeon RX 6000. It should be remembered, however, that the Steam Deck will not exceed HD quality in 60 FPS. In fact, running the biggest games will obviously come at the cost of many graphics concessions, starting with definition and framerate.
