UK hairdressers launch recycling initiative

As soon as the number of new corona infections decreases every day, we have time again to devote ourselves to other topics. This is where climate change has recently come back into play, and in the past 18 months there have been interesting suggestions for solving the problem.

Hairdressers from the United Kingdom have an interesting approach. Because even if we don’t actually pay any attention to the topic, tons of hair arise here every year that have to be disposed of. Mostly on the residual waste, as a result, CO2 is generated during incineration.

That’s why 550 hair salons in the UK and Ireland have joined forces over the past 10 months to form the Green Salon Collective. This group collects litter from hair salons and uses it on beaches to curb the spread of oil. Up to now, 50 kilograms of waste could be recycled in this way.

Further waste is given to farmers, who then compost their hair. The protein and nitrogen contained in hair can be used to fertilize and enrich plants.

But other waste should also be recycled as environmentally friendly as possible. The film used by hairdressers is usually only recycled in 1 percent of the cases; within the first 3 months of the initiative, 2.2 tonnes of this film were recycled. The hope is for more members in the future, whoever wants to join the GSC has to pay a one-time payment of 125 British pounds, and the contributors should pass the costs on to their customers as a green bonus.

Own opinion:

Waste is generated everywhere, personally I have hardly given any thought to the environment when I visit the hairdresser. With the new initiative, hair and other waste can be recycled or given a meaningful purpose. I think it’s good to pass the costs on to customers, it increases awareness of the environment.
