Turn off or completely restart iPhone? That’s how you do that!

Sometimes you really don’t want to be disturbed and it’s better to turn off your iPhone completely. Turning off your iPhone sounds so easy, but how do you actually do that? We show you how to turn off or restart any iPhone model.

Turn off iPhone X, iPhone 11 or iPhone 12

iPhones such as the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 without a home button can all be turned off in the same way. For a reboot, simply turn your phone back on after this procedure.

  1. Press and hold one of the volume buttons and the side (sleep) button;
  2. Wait for the ‘Turn off’ slider to appear and drag the slider to the right;
  3. Wait 30 seconds for your iPhone to turn off.

To turn your iPhone back on, press and hold the side button (right) until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or SE 2020

To turn off or restart the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or iPhone SE 2020, follow the next steps.

  1. Press and hold the side button (right) until the ‘Power off’ slider appears;
  2. Drag the slider to the right;
  3. Wait 30 seconds for your iPhone to turn off.

To turn your iPhone back on, press and hold the side button (right) until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone SE 2016 and older

The iPhone SE 2016 or older can be turned off in the following way.

  1. Press and hold the button on top of your iPhone;
  2. Wait for the ‘Turn off’ slider to appear;
  3. Drag the slider and wait 30 seconds for your iPhone to turn off.

When you want to turn the iPhone back on to restart it, press and hold the button on top until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Turn off iPhone without buttons

Each version of the iPhone has its own way of turning it off, but you can also turn it off without using the buttons. This is useful, for example, when the side button no longer works.

You then restart the iPhone via ‘Settings’. The great thing about this is that it works on any model of iPhone (as long as you have iOS 11 or later).

  1. Tap the ‘Settings’ app;
  2. Choose ‘General’;
  3. Scroll down and tap ‘Turn off’;
  4. Drag the slider at the top of the screen to the right;
  5. Wait 30 seconds for your iPhone to turn off.

Can’t turn off iPhone

Sometimes you can’t turn off your iPhone in the normal way. Your iPhone freezes, iPhone is not responding, or your iPhone hangs on the Apple logo. No problem, because it is also possible to switch off your iPhone without a touchscreen. You do this by forcing the shutdown. How you do that depends on the iPhone model you have.

iPhone SE (2020), 8, X, 11, and 12 Force Shutdown

On the iPhone SE, 8, X, 11, and 12, force the shutdown as follows.

  1. Short press the volume up button;
  2. Short press the volume down button;
  3. Press and hold the side button;
  4. The screen goes black and your iPhone is turned off;
  5. If you continue to hold the buttons, the Apple logo will reappear and your iPhone will restart.

To force power off iPhone 7, follow these three steps.

  1. Press and hold both the volume down button and the side button at the same time;
  2. The screen goes black and your iPhone is turned off;
  3. If you continue to hold the buttons, the Apple logo will reappear and your iPhone will restart.

Force off older iPhone

An even older iPhone with a home button can be forcibly turned off in the following way.

  1. Press and hold the home button and at the same time press the button on the top or right side of your phone;
  2. The screen goes black and your iPhone is turned off;
  3. If you continue to hold the buttons, the Apple logo will reappear and your iPhone will restart.
