Find photos on iPhone and iPad
It is of course very annoying if you have lost a certain photo on your iPhone. Sometimes it takes you too long to find the picture again. Browsing through all the photos one-by-one is quite time consuming.
Fortunately, there are a few tricks that will help you find the lost photo faster. With these tips we show you how you can search faster and more specifically on your iPhone and iPad.
The search bar: the easiest way to find photos
The easiest way to find photos is to use the magnifying glass. This allows you to search with keywords through all your photos. Your iPhone (or iPad) analyzes your photos when the device is connected to the power and automatically adds the keywords. Older photos are therefore usually quite searchable using these keywords. You do this in the following way.
- Open the Photos app;
- Tap the magnifying glass at the bottom (‘Search’);
- In the text box above, type the subject (or attribute) of your photo, for example ‘car’;
- At the bottom, your iPhone shows a selection of the photos found, tap ‘Show all’ to view all photos.
You can also use a combination of words. For example, with ‘car 2019’ it is possible to only see the photos from 2019 that show a car.
More ways to search photos on iPhone and iPad
You can find quite a few photos by searching with keywords. Yet you still run into problems when you are looking for a photo that has not (yet) been analyzed by Apple. Then use the following tips to search for your lost photos on your iPhone in a more targeted way.
Use the Library
If you remember when you took a photo, it’s a lot easier to find the photo. In the Photos app, tap “Library” at the bottom. You will then see the options ‘Years’, ‘Months’, ‘Days’ and ‘All photos’. For example, do you know that you took the photo sometime in January of 2021? Then tap ‘Months’ and scroll back to the correct month. Then tap one of the folders with photos.
Find photos with people
Your device will eventually know who is in your photos. You can use this nicely to search your iPhone for photos that contain one of your friends. You do this in the following way.
- Open the Photos app and tap “Albums” at the bottom;
- Scroll down and under ‘People and Places’ tap ‘People’;
- Tap on one of the passport photos and you will see all the photos that contain the chosen person.
Search by location
Do you remember where you took the photo? Then it is smart to view all photos of a certain location on the world map. Tap Albums, scroll down, then under People & Places, tap Places. You will then be presented with a world map with all the photos you have taken. Tap a stack of photos to view the photos you’ve taken in a specific location.
Find Photos on iPhone with Media Types
You can also search for this when you have taken a selfie, a live photo or panorama. This applies to all special photos and videos. For example, if you’re looking for a selfie you took a few years ago, it’s smart to just browse through all the selfies.
Tap “Albums” at the bottom and scroll down. Under ‘Media types’, tap the type of photo. For example, do you remember taking a portrait photo? Then tap on ‘Portrait’ to see all the photos.
